Accelerate Okanagan is proud to support the Kelowna Food Bank in it’s “Christmas in July” Campaign at our Okanagan Technology Community Summer Street Party on June 21st where we will be collecting food and raising money.
The Food Bank’s mission is to assist in alleviating chronic hunger and poverty in the Central Okanagan. In 1983, the Kelowna Community Food Bank Society set up operation in a church basement to meet emergency food needs for the community. Over the next two decades, the Kelowna Food Bank grew from serving 600 people per year to nearly 30,000, with nearly a third of them children.
Vonnie Lavers, Executive Director said, “Donations are the lifeblood of our organization, directly supporting the most vulnerable in our community.” Christmas in July serves two important purposes. First, it helps to remind the community that the spirit of Christmas should be year round. Second, as their major summer campaign, Christmas in July is critical for maintaining Food Bank inventory through the fall season.
