Here's what Joshua had to say about becoming an entrepreneur, the value of being involved in the Kelowna tech community, and what advice he would give to aspiring entrepreneurs.

What made you decide to become an entrepreneur?

It was never my intention, I was introduced to online advertising after high school and became infatuated. After working in various industries, I left a great job to test out working on my own, and that's where Data Nerds started.

How did the idea for your business come about?

Trial and error. We are still moulding our business, and it has been a phenomenal experience. Our business will be dramatically different in 5 years from now.

Tell us about your product:

We extract, aggregate, and compile public data from populous sources. Our database consists of billions of records which we provide for consumers and companies in the real estate industry.

What problem do you solve for your customer?

Accurate, up-to-date, and instantaneous data for buyers, sellers, and realtors.

How has AO helped accelerate your growth?

Accelerate Okanagan made our team focus on one project and dedicate 110% of our effort to it. Since then, our team and revenue doubled.

As an entrepreneur, what keeps you up at night?

Staff. Our team is growing quickly and this comes with many learning curves.

What's the value of being involved in the tech community?

Recent acquisitions in our region are setting Kelowna up to be a major player in the tech industry. We get to be right in the centre of it all.

How would you describe the work culture and environment at Data Nerds?

"No company has a culture; every company is a culture." Peter Thiel. We take our jobs very seriously, although work hard, play hard is ingrained in our culture. Ping Pong, stand up meetings, 3 PM walks, hoverboarding, biking, fitness challenges, and various other activities regularly take place.

What advice would you give aspiring entrepreneurs?

Read a book a week.

How has being an entrepreneur impacted your family, social life, or relationships?

It has allowed my little brother to come and work with us in his summer's off. As well, for the last couple years, I was able to travel home ever few weeks to visit my mother who beat cancer.

What have been some of your challenges and what have you learned from them?

The clock is always ticking, and we must take advantage of all the time available. A daily routine is mandatory and always set aside time for exercise, reading, meditation, and family.

What are 3 attributes needed to be a successful entrepreneur?

Hard work, focus, and optimism.

What roles are you looking to add to your growing team?

CFO, Back-end developers, front-end developers, customer success agents, marketing managers, and realtors.

Who do you look to for mentorship/advice and why?

This list continues to grow: family, Jesse Willms, Dan Rinehart, Matt Handal, Judy Bishop, Fraser Campbell, Brandt Fralick, and Will Walzack.

What's next for your company?

Our 2017 goal is to buy Microsoft and shut it down.

In one word, characterize your life as an entrepreneur.
